Why Art?

It challenges me.
Sure, chemistry and calculus did too, but Art challenged me in a whole new way.
I am driven by things I can't do, and I obsess until I learn to love them.
For instance, French! I was once told I couldn't ever speak it and would never know it.
I now have a French Minor.

Art was fun, art was my talent. It was almost easy. And then, I met Intaglio

Here was my first print. (Not a good print.) If you know the process, then you'll laugh. I tried to relief cut the copper plate instead of drawing little lines into it! Everyone laughed at me. I did not for the life of me understand the process! And to make matters worse, I printed on the blanket.

I could have cried and ran outta there, and said, "Screw Intaglio!" .... but instead I found it to be the one thing that challenged me in art. It took 3 classes for me to finally get it. I suffered through a C- in Lithography as well. Once I got past the challenge of the new process it was something I felt comfortable with and it made me want to explore the ins and outs of printmaking. I eventually made it into professional gallery showings, once earning an honorable mention.

Now, it's on to concept. New challenge!
I am still trying to figure my concept out for my BFA Final Show. I learn every single day - something new about myself as I am forced to think about what drives me and my art.
It really is like a relationship... you choose something/someone that continually makes you grow and better yoursef.

Love, Hate. But mostly Love :)
